OUR SERVICES

Speech and Language Therapy

The Neurology unit has a dedicated full-time speech and language therapist, covering all acute inpatient referrals.

The aim of speech and language therapy is to enable people to communicate or swallow to the best of their ability. Following assessment, the speech and language therapist will agree the best treatment approach for the individual’s speech, language or swallowing problem. This may involve individual therapy, including advice and support, as well as education for family members and carers on how they can help.

Communication

The speech and language therapist provides a service to people who have communication problems. These may be the result of stroke, progressive neurological disease, traumatic brain injury or voice production difficulties.

Individuals referred to the speech and language therapist may have difficulty understanding what is said to them or in expressing themselves clearly (dysphasia). They may not be able to read and write as well as they used to. They may not be able to tell their family how they feel or what they want to do.

Swallowing

The speech and language therapist also assesses, diagnoses and manages swallowing disorders (dysphagia) associated with acquired neurological disorders, stroke, and respiratory complications (e.g. tracheostomy).

Early intervention is desirable in contributing to the diagnosis and management of swallowing difficulties as part of the multi-disciplinary team. Our aim is to identify those individuals who have difficulty in swallowing and to ensure that eating and drinking is safe. Further investigations via a specialised x-ray (videofluoroscopy) or endoscopic examinations may also be required.
